Interview: The Original Horton’s Bermuda Black Rum Cakes

Interview: The Original Horton's Bermuda Black Rum Cakes

In our new series of interviews we are looking to interview and get to know local Bermudian business owners and entrepreneurs. They can be just starting or been in business for years, but we want to get to know what got them started and what has made them successful.

The goal is to help the community get to know the great people behind the businesses people see and use every day, and to hopefully inspire anyone to start their own business someday….

Linda Horton with Food Network’s Emeril Lagassi

How did the idea for your business come about?

Linda: No gourmet food products existed in 1985 when I brought this one to the market.

What is the significant difference your business brings to the market?

Linda: We sell the only rum cakes made from scratch when most all others use cake mix as the foundation for their products.

Describe-outline your typical day

Linda: I check in with our overseas distributor and review online orders, communicate with local vendors, make deliveries and manage many the administrative needs and duties.

What has been your most satisfying moment in business?

Linda: Receiving the first of two phone calls from The Food Network requesting permission to film the making of Horton’s cakes.

What has been your most successful form of marketing?

Linda: Word of mouth was the most successful. That and sampling of the product.

How do you build a successful customer base?

Linda: By being responsive and thanking them personally whenever I can.

What kind of culture exists in your organization?

Linda: A can do culture. If it’s possible to achieve we will do it for you.

Excluding yours, what company or business do you admire the most?

Linda: Lilli Perfumes

Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?

Linda: In the hands of my children and grandchildren

Describe your business in three words…

Linda: Honest, Consistent and Reliable
