In our new series of interviews we are looking to interview and get to know local Bermudian business owners and entrepreneurs. They can be just starting or been in business for years, but we want to get to know what got them started and what has made them successful.
The goal is to help the community get to know the great people behind the businesses people see and use every day, and to hopefully inspire anyone to start their own business some day….
How did the idea for your business come about?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: Desire to support children, and adults, in Bermuda in reaching their full potential in communication and education
What is the significant difference your business brings to the market?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: Experience in many Government venues before starting my private practice has helped in filling the “gaps”. In addition, being a parent with a child with learning challenges makes it personal for me in supporting other families.
How did you decide on the location for your business?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: Ha!! I literally walked up and down so many street with pad of paper in hand asking if businesses had or knew of any space available. Found the ideal spot on Lovers Lane in Paget. Ideal location, near town and many schools, yet not needing to fight the
How important have good employees been to your success?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: I have had one employee who was fantastic in working with children needing learning support. I have yet to fill her shoes and am presently working solo focusing on speech and language intervention.
Describe/outline your typical day?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: I am either seeing clients in my awesome office (more like a huge play room) or at a variety of schools. I mostly eat lunch at my desk, but ensure that I have a good balance so that I can still share drop-off and pick-up duty with my husband as we have……
What has been your most satisfying moment in business?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: Actually commencing my private practice, 13 years ago. Never thought I would have the ability to run a business as I am a people person, not a numbers/business person. And of course, the reason that I love my job so much, is that each and every day I…..
What has been your most successful form of marketing?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: Word of mouth really. That’s Bermuda for you!
How do you build a successful customer base?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: Initially, I visited every pediatrican’s office and smoe schools. I am registered with the local Speech Therapists Association, BerSLA as well as the Council for Allied Health Professions.
What kind of culture exists in your organization?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: I am Bermudian and work with all cultures, anyone in Bermuda.
Excluding yours- what company or business do you admire?
Sally Ann (DeSilva) Topley: Anyone that works so dilligently with children and their families to help support and enhance the quality of life and betterment of Bermuda’s people.
Where you see yourself and your business in 10 years? 20 years?
