The man with the Rub, Michiko Campbell has given us a little insight on how his progress over the past year with Chiko’s Smokey Rub has gone. Here’s what he had to say.
How have things been for you and Chiko’s Smokey Rub since the last time we spoke?
Business is doing excellent. At least 5000 bottles have been sold since last year June 2014. The business is growing faster and faster every week. With my fiancé doing all the marketing through social media etc., it keeps customers well engaged.
Are you happy with the progress you have made thus far and are you on track with where you want Chiko’s Smokey Rub to be at this point?
I am very happy with the progress. I am on track for where I want Chiko’s Smokey Rub to be. There is still a way to go. I want it to be known worldwide.
Are you getting a lot of support from the Bermudian public?
The support from my fellow Bermudians have been none other than amazing. Very supportive, it has been great. I find now days that I can be walking in town or at the grocery store and people stop me “Hey Chiko, I just want to let you know that I cook with your seasonings every night. I really enjoy them” or “Hey that’s Chiko right there that makes the delicious seasonings” or “hey that’s the seasoning guy”. It’s a great feeling. I am happy that I can say I created products that are truly made in Bermuda.
You have more flavours now, what are they and how have they been received by your customers?
Since our last interview, I have created 4 more flavours. “Ham Seasoning” which came out in November 2014, I brought it out just before Thanksgiving and Christmas to target those seasons. It can be used on anything as well. No pork additives are in the seasoning. I have had customers use it on their ribs and even fish. “Triple-Garlic Fusion” came out November 2014 as well. This is great for anything as well. Mainly customers use it on their pastas, rices, and even a topping on popcorn. “Spicy Fusion” which is the spicy version to the “original” flavour. “Middle-Eastern Spice” which has a Moroccan and Indian influence but also a Bermudian twist.
The first flavor “Original” has a nice, unique flavor. Created June 4, 2014.
Customers have been buying them up in Lindos Devonshire & Warwick, Brown & Co, Chef Shop, Home Worx and The Pheonix Store
Which is the most popular flavour at the moment?
The most popular at the moment are the “Original” and the “Middle-Eastern Spice”. They are flying off the shelves. But I must say all the flavours do pretty good.
Your 1 year anniversary is coming up, how do you feel about reaching a year in managing your own business and also being successful?
I feel blessed. I am so happy it has really taken off like this. One year ago I was entering unknown waters not knowing how my business will do. Now the demand is growing stronger and stronger. It’s a great feeling. It is hard work but well worth it, but never forget to give back when you receive.
You are celebrating your 1 year anniversary at Harbour Nights which seems fitting since you were a huge hit at Harbour Nights last year. Can you tell us a little bit about that?
On Wednesday, June 3rd I will be celebrating the 1 year anniversary at the opening of Harbour Nights. It will be a great celebration. Free goodies and I will be cooking on the grill. There will also be all 5 flavours of Chiko’s Smokey Rub’s for sale.
Mr. Campbell has taken his passion and turned it into a real Bermudian brand. He takes pride in knowing he has the support of his Fiancé in taking on all marketing aspects of the business to help promote and create awareness island wide. His goal is for Chiko’s Smokey Rub to be known worldwide, so let’s make sure he is on every shelf in every home in Bermuda first. Get down to Harbour Nights tonight from 6pm to show some love for Chiko’s Smokey Rub 1 year anniversary celebration. Who can resist a BBQ and free giveaways? I know I can’t, I hope to see you all there.
